  • IGRF Vertical Rigidity Cutoff Calculation

This page enables users to calculate the Vertical Rigidity Cutoff for any position.

  • Calculation Strategy

With given input data at first the Stoermer Vertical Rigidity Cutoff is estimated as a starging point (see Stoermer Rigidity Cutoff).

From this value the backtracing range is estimated:

  1. From 60% to 140% of this value for Latitude below 30°
  2. From 35% to 165% of this value for Latitude between 30° and 60°
  3. From 20% to 180% of this value for Latitude above 60°

Each range is divided in 100 Rigidity steps and a positive particle (proton) trajectory is reconstructed for each value back in time to the external (see Magnetopause Models) or internal boundaries (set at 20 km above the sea level).

Upper Rigidity Cutoff is the last rigidity (bottom-top) value for which all trajectories are allowed (Primary CR) and Lower Rigidity Cutoff is last rigidity value (top-bottom) for which all trajectories are forbidden (Secondary or Trapped CR).

Effective Rigidity Cutoff is the simple average value between these 2 limits.

Input Parameters

Input values are:

  • Geographical latitude (from 88 to -88 deg.)
  • Geographic longitude (from 0 to 360 deg.)
  • Altitude from the Earth's surface (in km)
  • Time (year,month,day,hour,min,sec)

Output Parameters

Output data are:

  • Stoermer Vertical Rigidity Cutoff
  • IGRF Upper, Lower and Effective Vertical Rigidity Cutoff
